Pipe leak tape goes by many names, but it serves the same purpose. Teflon, plumber’s tape, and leak repair tape are all types of pipe leak tape used to repair plumbing issues. Typically, silicone or self-fusing tape is best for fixing hairline cracks and non-joint leaks. Pipe thread tape, known as Teflon, is often best for leaks at a joint. Locate the Leak. Turn Off Your Main Water Supply. Turn On Your Faucets to Relieve the Pressure. Apply the Relevant Fix. Turn the Water on and Inspect your Handiwork. Types of Repairs. 1: Fixing a Leaking Pipe With Pipe Wrap Tape. 2: Fixing a Leaking Pipe With Epoxy Putty. 3: Fixing a Leaking Pipe With a Pipe Repair Cast. Steps. Turn off the water supply to the leaking threaded joint. Use a clean cloth or rag to remove any water buildup or drip around the leaking area. If there is rust or damage on the pipe, smooth it out with sandpaper. Mix the two parts of the repair epoxy putty together, following the manufacturer’s instructions. To use it, tightly wrap the repair tape around the leak and then test the pipe. If the leak persists, use more and ensure that the tape is tightly wound around the pipe. Hose clamps: Hose clamps use compression to take care of smaller leaks. Apply rubber to the affected area then affix the hose clamps over the rubber and clamp down. With the gasket positioned over the leak, the fasteners are tightened, and the sleeve will compress the gasket creating a watertight seal. How To Use: Remove fastener (s). Open clamp and place on pipe. Position clamp with gasket over leak. Tighten fastener (s). 3. Use a Repair Coupling. Clean the threads at the end of the radiator before installing the new valve. Wrap PTFE tape around the threads of the new adapter (see above) and screw it into the end of the radiator, be sure to not overtighten and damage the fixing. Slide the valve cap-nut and a new olive over the end of the pipe and connect the new valve. Making repairs to leaking galvanized or iron piping systems can require cutting and threading the pipe.
