At 2757m (9,045ft) above sea level Stelvio Pass is the highest paved road in Italy and, since the 1953 Giro, many pages in the history of cycling has been written on its legendary 88 switchbacks. Not less challenging nor famous are the mighty peaks of Passo Gavia (2621m – 8,600ft) and the harsh ramps of Passo Mortirolo (1852m – 6,075ft).

Path of peace. The Path of Peace is a 520 km hiking route that connects the Stelvio Pass with the Marmolada of great historical importance: it winds along the line of the Italian-Austrian front of the First World War. To travel it all it takes a month, but you can also undertake it at times.
1. The Great Dolomites Road. The most famous road is the Great Dolomites Road or Grande Strada delle Dolomiti in Italian. You can find some different routes online, but it stretches about 100km long and covers many, many beautiful areas. The Great Dolomite Road starts in Bolzano and ends in Cortina D’Ampezzo.
What a ride! Aug. 2022. Climbed the Stelvio from two sides, first from Bormio over the Umbrail Pass. Then we charged downhill and across a wonderful valley in Switzerland and back up via Prado.The climb was brutal but the achievement of negotiating the 88 hairpin bends was so worthwhile.
